Meaning and Examples of Active and Passive Verbs

ACTIVE AND PASSIVE  VERBS 

ACTIVE VERBS – In active voice, the subject does the action.

STRUCTURE – Subject + Verb + Object

EXAMPLES 

The teacher explains the lesson.

The boy kicked the ball.

The dog chased the cat.

She wrote a letter.

The chef cooked a delicious meal.

They built a new house.

The farmer planted corn.

The singer performed beautifully.

The students answered all the questions.

He cleaned the room.

 

PASSIVE VERBS – In passive voice, the subject receives the action.

STRUCTURE – Object + form of be + past participle + (by + subject)

EXAMPLES 

The lesson was explained by the teacher.

The ball was kicked by the boy.

The cat was chased by the dog.

A letter was written by her.

A delicious meal was cooked by the chef.

A new house was built by them.

Corn was planted by the farmer.

The song was performed beautifully by the singer.

All the questions were answered by the students.

The room was cleaned by him.
