Reading to Follow Directions in Written Communication

READING TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS IN WRITTEN COMMUNICATION

Reading to follow directions means carefully reading written instructions and doing exactly what they say. It helps you understand and carry out tasks correctly, whether it’s in schoolwork, exams, letters, or real-life situations like filling forms or following recipes.

Purpose

1. To understand what to do and how to do it.

2. To avoid mistakes when carrying out instructions.

3. To complete tasks correctly and safely.

Examples of Written Directions

1. Examination instructions: “Answer all questions in Section A and any two from Section B.” (You must read carefully so you don’t answer the wrong number of questions.)

2. Recipe instructions: “Add two cups of water and stir for five minutes.” (You must measure and stir exactly as instructed.)

3. Form filling: “Write your surname in capital letters.” (You must use capital letters for your surname.)

4. Letter or notice: “Submit your assignment on or before Friday.” (You must turn it in before Friday.)

How to Read to Follow Directions

1. Read the instructions carefully — more than once.

2. Identify key words like write, circle, underline, tick, choose, fill, draw.

3. Follow the order of the directions step by step.

4. Check your work to be sure you followed all directions.
